Fracture First Aid
⏱️ Introduction
A fracture is a break or crack in a bone caused by trauma or force. It can be simple (closed) or compound (open). Proper first aid can prevent further injury and reduce pain and complications.
🚨 Signs of a Possible Fracture:
- Severe pain, worsens with movement
- Swelling or bruising
- Deformity or unnatural angle
- Inability to move the limb
- Bone protruding from the skin (open fracture)
- A “crack” or “snap” sound at the moment of injury
🧰 First Aid Steps for Fractures:
1. Stay Calm and Ensure Safety
- Make sure the scene is safe.
- Do not move the person unless necessary.
2. Immobilize the Area
- Do not try to realign the bone.
- Use a splint or bind the injured limb to a healthy one.
- Items like sticks, rolled-up newspapers, or boards can work as splints.
3. Apply Cold to Reduce Pain and Swelling
- Use an ice pack wrapped in cloth for 15–20 minutes.
- Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
4. Elevate the Injured Limb
- If not involving spine or pelvis, elevate to reduce swelling.
5. Protect Open Fractures
- If bone is sticking out, cover with a sterile dressing without applying pressure.
6. Do Not Give Food or Drink
- In case surgery is needed, keep the person fasting.
7. Get Medical Help Immediately
- Call emergency services or transport the person carefully to the hospital.
📝 Important Tips:
- Do not move the neck/spine if spinal injury is suspected.
- Never try to straighten or pull on the limb.
- Monitor consciousness, breathing, and pulse while waiting for help.
✅ Summary:
Proper first aid can prevent serious complications like infection, nerve damage, or permanent disability. Quick thinking and correct actions save lives.
